Helping the Wrongly Convicted
Julie Santarossa is an active member of Association in the Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC). AIDWYC is an organization that attempts to assist people who have been wrongly convicted of a criminal offence that they did not commit by reviewing cases and making applications to the Criminal Convictions Review Group of the Federal Department of Justice under s. 696.1 of the Criminal Code. AIDWYC also attempts to address the causes of miscarriages of justice by making representations to the government for reforms of the legal system, raising public awareness about miscarriages of justice and participating in public inquiries that relate to wrongful convictions.
As a member of AIDWYC, Ms. Santarossa is currently conducting an independent review of a case of a second degree murder conviction from British Columbia that may require an application for review to the Federal Department of Justice. As a volunteer, Ms. Santarossa believes that it is important to give her time to a cause that can so greatly affect another person's life and betters the justice system.
